Act I

FADE
IN..There is a citizen shown telling the ones beside him “The queen has given
birth to a girl, happy days are here again”. This news is shown being passed on
from one person to another and then crowd slowly goes into a celebratory mood.
People are shown dancing, singing, distributing sweets and children running all
around screaming “The heir is born, the heir is born”.

Suddenly the clouds go black and lightning strikes. A nearby banyan tree is
burnt to ashes; people are thrown into a sudden state of shock. Out of the smoke
comes a very war ready woman with devilish characteristics. She is tall to look
at and has a pointy face with deep red eyes. Her armor is thick and unearthly.
Once the smoke around her blows away she steps forward, and looks around at the
trembling town folk and gives a half smile. She then moves ahead towards the
town hall, the citizen’s move away giving her way. The king on receiving news
about this abomination takes action to protect his queen and daughter. He then
arms himself, and moves towards the town hall. FADE OUT…

FADE
IN… The town hall is a building with huge pillars with sculptures on them and armored
guards at the entrances there are paintings of ancestors. In the middle there
is a huge elevation on top of which is a golden throne with a lion head
protruding from the top. Then out of the main entrance he sees her and his eyes
widen in fear. Moving towards the throne she says “DASHARATH I am SAKASHU the
ruler of the neither land and have come to warn you of an impending doom.

Your daughter is in danger to be killed unless you can take measures to protect
her.” To this the king looks aghast and shouts out “SAKASHU how dare you say
such a thing.” SAKASHU replies, “I am not speaking lies ruler, but am merely
warning you. Unless you take care to protect your daughter with a protector
that can do no wrong and has no desires, you shall loose her to me on the 12^th
day of the 12^th month.” A cloud of smoke is seen and she vanishes
from scene. FADE OUT…

Act I summary

The
clouds are dark and the princess is lying asleep, RECAHUH is there protecting
her. While he looks at the princess asleep he stares at the open window and realizes
that there are 5 ways in which an attack is possible at this location. He then
moves around in the room and secures it placing traps. Then he moves into his
part of the chamber and then rests his body slightly on the bed provided for
him. Once his eyes are slightly closed, he starts to again dream of a long
corridor and from this place he sees that there is someone attacking the royal
palace.

Even though he tries a lot he is unable to make a move. He does not know why
this is happening but every time that he gets this dream he wakes up panting
gasping for air. He then goes out of her room and then takes a walk, during
this time he hears the king and his ministers in deep conversation. All that he
manages to hear about is something relating to the princesses safety and an
imminent threat to the throne.

The next morning during his routine rounds of the castle he sees that WAZIR the
minister and a few of his followers are all grouped together and are muttering
something, upon going a little closer he hears something faintly similar.
Although he is unable to place what he is listening to, he feels that he knows
what is going on and suddenly he gets restless and his heart starts to
palpitate. This happens for the first time and he falls to the ground.

Upon getting up he sees that he is in a room and his hands are tied, through
the dark he hears a voice asking him what he was doing there. To which he
replies that he was merely on his rounds and that he heard nothing and saw
nothing. Then all of a sudden he hears the same chants that were being said
before and he once again goes into a state of shock, but this time he starts
getting visions and flashbacks. He is unsure of what it is that he is seeing
but then at the same time he also is afraid of what is about to come.

Plot
Point I

RECAHUH
suddenly gets up gasping, and looks around he sees WAZIR standing and looking
down at him. WAZIR says “how are you feeling now”?. RECAHUH replies “I am
feeling fine sir, although I am unsure as to how I came about to being here.
One minute I am looking at you and the next moment I am having these weird
dreams and then am now awake.” “These dreams that you speak of, tell me about
them.” Says WAZIR. “The dreams are always the same I dream of a corridor and
then see that the royal palace is under siege and although I try to move and
help I am unable to since I am all bound up.”

At this moment a guard comes running into the room and says that the king has
called for an urgent meeting, something relating to the princess feeling
unwell. They rush to the palace and then see that the princess is looking
uneasy and is down on the floor. The king shouts at RECAHUH “What happened to
the princess, where were you at night.” “I was right here in the princesses
chambers my lord.” replies RECAHUH.

At the precise moment the princess screams “NO,NO don’t please I beg of you.”
And then faints. RECAHUH runs to her aid and at soon as he touches her, he sees
that she is burning up and is sweating. Aghast at this the king pushes RECAHUH
aside and then moves in to take care of his daughter. After seeing to it that
the medic is trying to cure her the king turns to RECAHUH and shouts “How could
you have let this happen, what is even worse is that u have no idea of what
happened to the princess.” RECAHUH replies “ I was in her room the whole time
my lord and I made sure that nothing or no one could enter with me knowing
about it.”

“looks like you have done a bad job of it, you are hence forth banished from
the palace and are to never be seen here again.” “I give you till tonight to
leave.” “Sir, please do forgive me, for I shall right my wrongs and make the
princess better.” Says RECAHUH. “LEAVE NOW OR I SHALL HAVE YOU KILLED.” Thunders
the king.

FADE
OUT….

ACT
2.. FADE IN… Now that he is banished from the palace, RECAHUH is all
disappointed and goes away in search of a place to stay. Seeing that he has no
one else to turn to, WAZIR beckons him to come and stay with him. Although
skeptical about this RECAHUH goes along. FADE OUT… BLACK SCREEN WITH LETTERING…
A few days later… somewhere in the forest… FADE IN… RECAHUH is walking along
with WAZIR and then he is trying to explain to him the dream that he keeps
having, although WAZIR has a slight idea of what the dream is about he say
nothing to RECAHUH. On being explained about the dream, WAZIR says to RECAHUH
that the dream must have something to do with the curse that the princess has
on her and that he should not bother himself too much to find out what it now
since he has been banished from the kingdom. Hearing this RECAHUH feels aghast and
silently starts running away towards the forest.

CUT TO THE NIGHT… sitting in front of a fire RECAHUH suddenly feels a short jab
to his neck and falls down. FADE OUT… FADE IN… RECAHUH is getting up all groggy
and stunned he looks around and sees that he is in WAZIR’s house. He gets up
suddenly and then see that WAZIR is standing and looking at him, he gets up and
asks him what happened to which he is told that he was found lying unconscious
in the forest and that WAZIR had brought him back and then nursed him back to
health… the incident happened 4 days ago… then slowly RECAHUH is told that it
was the king who had ordered his assault and that WAZIR came to know about this
because of his aides that he still has in the king’s circle of trust. Hearing
this RECAHUH starts to burn with anger and suddenly his body get all stiff and
shaky.

Seeing this WAZIR tells him that he has to exact revenge and that he should
help him in his plot to overthrow the king and takeover the kingdom, to this
first RECAHUH acts surprised at first but as the thought of him being banished
and assaulted starts to set into his head he agrees with WAZIR and starts to
formulate a plan. Seeing that RECAHUH is now on their side, WAZIR finally does
what he had never done before. He take RECAHUH into his secret base, where he
had initially created RECAHUH from CLAY. He shows him the place and the plans
that he has for the king’s death. FADE OUT…

FADE
IN…NIGHT TIME… RECAHUH is poised on a mountain scouting the palace to begin the
assault on the King. The king walks onto his balcony and there he looks around
at his kingdom all the same time thinking about the plight that his daughter is
in. His face is all wrinkled with grief and he is unable to really process
thoughts properly. At once glance he looks at the expanse of his kingdom and
that he is ready to give it all up just to see his daughter get back to proper
health and live a normal life. He suddenly sees a flash in the distance and he
knows that it is the sign for a ready signal for war. At once he gets alert and
looks keenly in all directions.

At this very moment RECAHUH suddenly gets a jolt in his body and sees that
WAZIR has pumped some form of liquid into his body. His body starts to heat up
from the inside and he gets a rushing charge of adrenaline. He starts to race
up towards the palace and the king upon spotting his raises the alarm and
quickly starts to secure the room and protect the princess. RECAHUH seeing this
quickens his pace and moves in longer strides towards the palace, he is stopped
by the general and after a battle that lasts for 20 minutes RECAHUH slays the
general and an army of 40 solders. HE then makes his way to the royal chambers,
here he is confronted by the king. The king is firstly surprised at RECAHUH’s
attack on the palace and on the very family that took care of him for so long.
Then seeing that RECAHUH is not able to finish the job WAZIR steps into the
room and issues a oral command to RECAHUH to slaughter the king.

On seeing that WAZIR is the one that is behind all this the king is outraged
and asks WAZIR why he is doing this and why he is playing with RECAHUH’s life.
The two of them go into a heady dialogue about the rights and wrongs. It is at
this time that RECAHUH looks at the princess, as he advances towards her he
again feels a sharp jab, it is WAZIR controlling him and ordering him to attack
and kill the whole royal family now. RECAHUH tries his best to control the urge
to try to resist killing the family. His efforts go in vain as he is unable to
stop himself and he draws his sword and gashes the princess. Realizing the
mistake that he has just committed RECAHUH falls to the ground and for the
first time in his life he emotes…

Plot
point(ACT 2)… FADE OUT… FADE IN… RECAHUH is on the floor and is suddenly
overcome with so many emotions. He looks up at WAZIR and asks” why is it that I
am suddenly unable to even look at myself nor am I able to move, my face feels
hot and my body feels weird”. Seeing that the potion was wearing off WAZIR replies
“ The truth is that u are not a human, you are a creation of mine, Made to
protect the princess against all possible evil forces and attacks.”” you were
made from the clay found at the bed of river SAMUDRA.” “ you were never meant
to be able to emote otherwise you wouldn’t be able to protect the princess, but
ever since I was removed from the kings circle of trust I had sworn to take my
revenge and I finally got that chance when I put a spell on the princess and
saw to it that you would be blamed.”” Then once I had you on my side it would
only be a matter of time after I gave you the magic potion that you would start
to feel emotions and be filled with rage and attack the royal family for me.
Thereby leaving me in the clear, but it seems to me now that you are quite
unable to do so.

For that I shall have to destroy you and
take care of the rest myself”. Saying this WAZIR takes out a bottle containing
a clear liquid, the king realizes that this is the water from the river. The
only thing that can harm RECAHUH, he quickly warns RECAHUH but to no avail. Filled
with rage and anger on being used by WAZIR, RECAHUH makes one final attempt at
an assault on WAZIR and in the battle that ensues along with the help of the
king RECAHUH finally manages to slay WAZIR. He ends up injuring himself also in
the process and falls down almost the same moment that he thrusts the Sword
into WAZIR’s heart. On the floor RECAHUH then looks at the king and says “ sire
forgive me for you were right it was my fault that I couldn’t not protect the
princess and it is because of me that she is now in the state of peril.”
DASARATH replies “nay young one you are the most admirable of my allegiances I
take you to be equal to my son and you were never at fault, had I know earlier
about WAZIR’s plans I would have slain him and all this turmoil would not have
been caused”. The suddenly RECAHUH starts to scream out in pain and his body
starts to turn to clay and harden up. Cracks start to form on his body and he
slowly starts to faint. At that very moment a messenger tell the king that his
daughter has awoken and is starting to speak and walk around. DASARATH falls
down weeping, he is not sure if he is to be happy or sad at this moment in
time. KASATHI comes into the room and sees RECAHUH on the floor and screams at
the top of her lungs and falls to his side. DASARATH narrates to her all that
happened, how WAZIR betrayed them about RECAHUH’s creations. At this point
KASATHI looks at DASARATH and weeps. “Is there no possible way of saving him at
all.” Asks KASATHI,” Not that we know of since he was created by WAZIR and of
late he was also controlled by him we have no way of knowing what to do.” Says DASARATH.
Right before their eyes they see RECAHUH’s body becoming more and more rigid
and start to turn into a solid mass of clay. Finally after a while his complete
body turns into clay and it just lies there. The entire royal family starts to
sob, and the king declares that week a week of mourning in honor of the bravest
man of the kingdom. RECAHUH. Soon after the mourning, in honor of RECAHUH the
king decides to have his clay figure encased in concrete and then placed right
outside the princesses quarters so that she feels safe. Right at the moment
that the encasing is about to being, a huge wall of smoke ensues and out of
that comes SAKASHU. “DASARATH do you know why I have come here,”” Yes I feared
this day would come” replies DASARATH, but I will not let you touch my daughter
whilst I am alive.” Replies DASARATH. “nay king I am not here for your daughter,
but I am here to tell you that even though RECAHUH is no longer with us, since
he was created magically he still has a few powers left inside him and for him
to constantly protect the princess I suggest that you take a small piece of
clay from his body and make an amulet for the princess to wear. This way he
shall always be around the princess and she shall be protected from all evil as
long as she wears the amulet.” Replies SAKASHU. Hearing this DASARATH starts
weeping “Aah RECAHUH even in death you are protecting my family, I was so wrong
to misjudge you from the very start.” FADE OUT… FADE IN… BLACK SCREEN 4 years
later… the princess is shown getting up and coming out onto the balcony and
there she sees the statuette of RECAHUH and then she is shown wearing the amulet,
she is forever protected… and the secrets of Akarsura have been exposed forever
more to power and destruction…

You can free up this space and enhance the overall performance of your PC by using a tool known as Disk Cleanup. This tool helps you locate the files that can be deleted without any effect on computer performance and then allows you to select the files identified from the list.

The following are the files that the Disk Cleanup tool helps you remove:

Deleted files stored in Recycle Bin.

Temporary Internet Files.

Windows components that are optional and not in use.

Other program files like Java applets and Microsoft ActiveX controls.

Old system restore points.

Unwanted programs.

To start freeing your disk space simply click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Disk Cleanup.

Remove Unwanted Programs

Recovering seemingly lost firefox bookmarks

On a Windows XP system, it should be easy to find your bookmarks file, then restore it.

1. In the My Computer directory/folder, choose the C: Drive.
2. Choose the Documents and Settings folder;
3. Then your user folder (what ever your user name is, there will be a folder for it)
4. Next, Application Data folder
5. Choose Firefox
6. Then choose the Profiles folder.

IMPORTANT: If you do not see the Application Data, your system is probably not set up to view hidden files/folders. In that case, while in My Computer (or any Windows Explorer window), choose Tools > Folder Options > View > select the radio button next to Show hidden files and folders. The Application Data folder should now be viewable.

For Windows Vista users, follow this path to find the Firefox profile folder:

In My Computer, choose the C: drive:

1. Then, Users
2. Then your user folder (what ever your user name is, there will be a folder for it)
3. Followed by AppData
4. Roaming
5. Mozilla
6. Firefox
7. Profiles

IMPORTANT: If you do not see the AppData folder, your system is probably not set up to view hidden files/folders. For Mac OS X Users,

1. Launch the Finder
2. The bookmarks.html file is found in your user Library
3. Choose Application Support
4. Then Firefox
5. Next Profiles

If you lost your first profile, it is possible Firefox created a new one, so there could be two (or more) profile folders, you will have to check both of them for the specific bookmarks file you want.

Look for bookmarks.html; double click to open it, and it should launch the file in Firefox. If not, right click on the file and choose Open with>Firefox.

Check over the contents, and if it looks like all your original bookmarks, that is the file you want to backup.

Copy and paste the bookmarks.html file into your My Documents folder for save keeping.

Note: It is possible that Firefox might automatically back up your bookmarks for you….in that profile, you might also see a folder named “bookmarkbackups.” Open that folder, and check to see if one of those backup .html files contains all your original bookmarks.
Import Bookmarks Back into Firefox

Okay, now that your bookmarks file is safely backed up to your My Documents, you can easily import it back into Firefox.

While Firefox is open, choose Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks. This will launch the Bookmark Manager.

1. In the Manager window, choose File>Import
2. Choose “From File”
3. Navigate to the file you copied into My Documents, and choose that file.
4. Click Open

This will import all the bookmarks from that file into Firefox.

Lesson learned: back up your Firefox bookmarks on a regular basis, and even if Firefox crashes and loses your bookmarks, you can easily restore the backup file.
Backing Up Firefox Bookmarks

An easy way to back up your Firefox bookmarks, in the Bookmark Manager, (remember? choose Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks)

Choose File>Export

This will create a copy of the bookmarks.html file - navigate to the location on your hard drive where you keep your backup files.

Suggestion: save it in My Documents in a sub-folder named “Firefox Bookmarks.” Include the date when you name the file (ie bookmarks-05-06-07.html) so you know at a glance how old your back up is. Keep several backup files in case one doesn’t work.

Hopefully it won’t happen again, but if Firefox loses your bookmarks in the future, follow the same import instructions listed above.

Export your bookmarks every week or month, and also remember to back up the files to a CD or an external hard drive in case your hard drive dies.
Moving Your Firefox Files to a New Computer

NEW TIP: If you are moving to a new computer or reinstalling your operating system, it is easy to save your Firefox bookmarks, cookies, passwords, preferences, extensions, themes, etc.

Find the whole Firefox folder (including the profile subfolder) and just drag it to a CD or USB Flash drive for safe keeping.

On your new system, after you install Firefox, delete the newly created Firefox folder, and drag over the saved folder from your backup. Launch Firefox and your browser should be as it was.

Mac OS X users, you might also need to copy/save your preference file. Found in Library>Preferences> copy the file named “org.mozilla.firefox.plist” and replace it on the new system.

Disable those annoying "X Application has Encountered a Problem and Must be Shut Down" messages in Windows XP

It's frustrating enough when your application crashes. Then the annoying dialog expects you to "Send an Error Report to Microsoft". As if I want Microsoft to know exactly which programs I'm running on my computer.

Here's two ways to turn off that error reporting. First, you can Right-Click on My Computer, go to the Advanced Tab, and choose the "Disable error reporting" option.

Alternatively, you can navigate to the services console in Administrative tools, find the Error Reporting Service, go into properties and disable it. Either way, those annoying dialogs are gone!

Fix slow web page loading on DSL or any connection

This tweak is also valid for any windows version, and I have heard other operating systems to include Linux.

Symptom: 10 to 30 seconds delay or maybe even up to 1 minute when loading any web page. Once a web page is up, full internet speed is available, also downloads are not affected by speed loss. If you have TCP/IP version 6 installed this is highly likely the problem.

How to check if IPv6 is installed (Windows XP): Open up the control pannel. If it is titled "pick a category", click "switch to classic view." Open "Network Connections." Here there should be a list of your internet connections, they could be network cards, dial-up connections, or others. Find the one you connect to the internet with, for example "Local Area Connection #1" Right-click on its icon and choose properties. In the middle of the properties window you will see a smaller window that is titled "This connection uses the following items." Some of the common items are: "Client for microsoft networks" "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)"

How to fix (Windows XP): In this windows if you see one of the items labeled "Microsoft TCP/IP version 6" select it and click the uninstall button. DO NOT UNINSTALL "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)" this will disable your internet connectivity completely.

Other Notes: As far as I know this will be the next internet standard, but for now using the standard "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)" will work. You shouldn't find any problems uninstalling IPv6. You may ask how did this get installed? IPv6 is listed in windows updates and could be installed this way. I am guessing that IPv6 slows down web connections because most web servers aren't using it yet.

Stopping your system from the 60 second restart

You can stop a computer from automatically rebooting during the 60 second countdown by doing the following:

1. Head to the Start button
2. Select Run...
3. type shutdown -a in the popup window
4. Select the Ok button to issue the command

You can "stop" the Remote Procedure Call Service from shutting down the system after 60 seconds each time the attack is attempted. This does not apply to LSASS.exe. I absolutely do not condone this action as a "fix," but it could be used to stop the system from rebooting while you are attempting to repair the issue and scan your computer for vulnerabilities if you have not already activated your firewall. In an effort to ensure that your system will not be attacked while attempting to solve the problem, disconnect the computer from the internet:

1. Head to the Start button
2. Select Run...
3. type services.msc in the popup window
4. Select the Ok button to issue the command
5. Select the Remote Procedure Call Service from the list by double clicking it
6. Select the "Recovery" tab (Image 1.1)
7. The default for this service is "Restart the Computer" for all failures
8. Change each one to "Restart the Service"
9. Select the Ok button to apply the settings

Again, this should not be done to fix the reboot issue, only to ensure that you have the proper amount of time to correct the problems.

The anti-filesharing organisations like the MPAA and RIAA use plenty of dirty tricks to spy on filesharers: from spreading viruses to hacking into servers to plant 'evidence', and now they are applying tricks on Bittorrent:

Fake Torrents:

They plant fake torrent files on regular torrent listing sites. The torrent-filename will be similar to what you are used to, like the special way aXXo names his files, for example.

The fake torrents will either have spying trackers attached that record your IP address, or the torrent will download a special type of movieformat which requires a spyware-filled movieplayer that you are tricked into downloading (like the 3wplayer from play.com3w.com or play.play3w.com, or the DivoCodec, or the DomPlayer). Also, files that are compressed with the WinZix compressor are very likely to be fake.

Remedies:

-- Try to get your torrents from a trusted site, and from a user-account that you know you can trust (check the torrent's comments if there are any).

-- If you've downloaded a file that requires a dodgy movieplayer like 3wplayer, the DivoCodec, or the DomPlayer, then just delete the file and remove the torrent because it is a fake file. If you've already installed that movieplayer: uninstall it, and do a thorough anti-virus and anti-spyware scan of your system.

-- ZipTorrent : sends out fake data on purpose to poison the torrent and may also act as spyware. Do not use it.

Microsoft to modify Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy scheme

Microsoft is making changes to its Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) anti-piracy strategy via a coupleof modifications it will implement in Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 and Windows Server 2008 next year.

Microsoft to modify Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy schemeMicrosoft is doing away with “reduced functionality mode” for individuals that its WGA activation and validation scheme deems to be running “non-genuine” software. The company also is plugging two WGA loopholes that pirates have been exploiting successfully.

Microsoft is attributing the changes it is making to “feedback from customers and partners.”

Microsoft announced plans for its WGA changes on December 4. The Release Candidate build of Windows Vista that is expected to go to testers before the end of this week will not include the changes. But Microsoft will introduce the changes to future test builds of Windows SP 1 before the final version is released in the first quarter of 2008. Ditto with Windows Server 2008 — the current Windows Server 2008 test builds do not include the WGA changes, but some future builds will. Windows Server 2008 is slated to be released to manufacturing in early 2008.

Microsoft is disabling two of the most common venues via which partners attack Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008: the “OEM BIOS exploit,” which involves pirates modifying system files on OEM-pre-installed copies of Vista, as well as and the “Grace Timer exploit,” via which pirates reset the “grace time” limit between installation and activation.

At the same time, instead of punishing customers whose copies of Windows are deemed pirated by automatically degrading their functionality, Microsoft is taking a new tack: It will deliver to potential piracy victims “clear and prominent notices about the status of their system and how to get genuine,” according to a Microsoft press statement. “(users) won’t lose access to functionality or features, but it will be very clear to them that their copy of Window Vista is not genuine and they need to take action.” (Microsoft officials said they didn’t have a screen shot to share of the new notification system for WGA.)

So what do Microsoft watchers think of these changes?

“I like where (the) WGA (team) is taking it. It’s a kind of zen-like compromise,” said Roger Kay, President of Endpoint Technologies Associates. “The black screen and continuous notices are annoying enough to get all but the hardcore thieves to true up, and yet Microsoft isn’t really taking any overtly draconian measures to enforce its IP. It’s as if Solomon divided the baby perfectly down the middle. The company will still use advanced engineering to find the hacks, but is taking a gentler, but probably more effective, approach to enforcement.”

Chris Swenson, Director of Software Industry Analysis with the NPD Group, concurred:

“I think the changes are meaningful. I think this shows that Microsoft has
learned from the past product activation mistakes of, say, Intuit, and has taken a somewhat ’softer’ approach when dealing with potential victims of piracy.”

Microsoft also announced two new data points, regarding WGA, this week. First, Microsoft reminded company watchers that five percent of its growth in Windows client during its most recent fiscal quarter is attributable directly to fighting piracy via WGA. Said Endpoint’s Kay:

“The big news in that announcement is how much money WGA is contributing to the bottom line. Microsoft’s theory is, if piracy is 35 percent overall, but only 10 percent of pirates are hardcore, then it can increase its revenue by, say, 40 percent just by herding in the errant, but not evil, users. It can leave the nasty guys for another day.”

The other big claim — which Microsoft has yet to substantiate via an independent third-party researcher (but which it has unearthed on its own): Vista’s piracy rate so far is half of Windows XP’s.

“Given the impact that this is going to have on Microsoft’s top line — Microsoft believes that WGA and other efforts have translated into OEM sales that are outpacing overall PC sales growth - I think the Wall treet is going to start paying attention, Swenson said.

Creating a Shutdown/Reboot/Logoff Icon

WindowsXP has a program called SHUTDOWN.EXE which allows you to easily create icons to shutdown or restart your computer.

To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:

Right click on an open area of the desktop
Select New / Shortcut
Enter in "shutdown -s -t 00" - no quotes
Press the Next button
For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use shutdown. Click on the Finish button.

For a reboot, enter "shutdown -r -t 00"
For a logoff, enter "shutdown -l -t 00"

Shutdown [{-l|-s|-r|-a}] [-f] [-m [\\ComputerName]] [-t xx] [-c "message"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy]

Parameters

-l - Logs off the current user, this is also the defualt. -m ComputerName takes precedence.
-s - Shuts down the local computer.
-r - Reboots after shutdown.
-a - Aborts shutdown. Ignores other parameters, except -l and ComputerName. You can only use -a during the time-out period.
-f - Forces running applications to close.
-m [\\ComputerName] - Specifies the computer that you want to shut down.
-t xx - Sets the timer for system shutdown in xx seconds. The default is 20 seconds.
-c "message" - Specifies a message to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. You can use a maximum of 127 characters. You must enclose the message in quotation marks.

1.From the menu bar, select File/New, and make the file size about 200 pixels by 200 pixels. Make sure that the file is in RGB mode.

2.Select a light blue for the foreground color, (I used #cff8fc) and a darker blue for the background color (I used #010d62). Of course, you can select any colors that you prefer, but for best results select two colors that have a high constrast.

3.Select Filters > Render > Clouds.

4.Behold! The heavens appear within your file. The clouds filter uses the foreground and background colors you have chosen to create the clouds in your file. If you don't like the first effect you get with this filter, hit Ctrl + F on Windows, Command + F on the mac, which will reapply the filter and give a slightly different result each time.

5. Return to the Filter menu. Select Render > Lighting Effects.

6. In the Light Effects menu, change the shape of the ellipse to a circle that is centered within your file. Use the Default Spotlight setting, but change the Narrow setting to 39.

This guide describes how to upgrade a Microsoft Microsoft Windows 98-based, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based client that has user profiles to a Microsoft Windows XP-based client.

The following steps enable the Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me) profiles to be retained throughout the process.

Your best method to retain the profiles is to join the domain during the upgrade installation process.
Otherwise, you must use a workaround method to transfer the profile information over to the Windows XP profile.

During the upgrade installation process, at the networking section, the administrator is offered the choice to join a domain or a workgroup.
If you join the domain at this juncture, you ensure that all the existing profiles are migrated successfully to the Windows XP-based installation.

If you did not join the computer to the domain during the upgrade process, you must use the following workaround method:

Join the upgraded computer to the target domain.

All applicable users must log on and log off (which generates a profile).

Copy the appropriate Application Data folder from the Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me profiles to the newly created user profiles.

AVI File Fix in Windows XP

Set up and Use Internet Connection Sharing

With Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Windows XP, you can connect one computer to the Internet, then share the Internet service with several computers on your home or small office network. The Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP Professional will automatically provide all of the network settings you need to share one Internet connection with all the computers in your network. Each computer can use programs such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express as if they were directly connected to the Internet.
You should not use this feature in an existing network with Windows 2000 Server domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP addresses.

Enabling ICS

The ICS host computer needs two network connections. The local area network connection, automatically created by installing a network adapter, connects to the computers on your home or small office network. The other connection, using a 56k modem, ISDN, DSL, or cable modem, connects the home or small office network to the Internet. You need to ensure that ICS is enabled on the connection that has the Internet connection. By doing this, the shared connection can connect your home or small office network to the Internet, and users outside your network are not at risk of receiving inappropriate addresses from your network.
When you enable ICS, the local area network connection to the home or small office network is given a new static IP address and configuration. Consequently, TCP/IP connections established between any home or small office computer and the ICS host computer at the time of enabling ICS are lost and need to be reestablished. For example, if Internet Explorer is connecting to a Web site when Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, refresh the browser to reestablish the connection. You must configure client machines on your home or small office network so TCP/IP on the local area connection obtains an IP address automatically. Home or small office network users must also configure Internet options for Internet Connection Sharing. To enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Discovery and Control on Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition computers, run the Network Setup Wizard from the CD or floppy disk on these computers. For ICS Discovery and Control to work on Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition computers, Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later must be installed.

To enable Internet Connection Sharing on a network connection

You must be logged on to your computer with an owner account in order to complete this procedure.
Open Network Connections. (Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double–click Network Connections.)

Click the dial–up, local area network, PPPoE, or VPN connection you want to share, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.

On the Advanced tab, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
If you want this connection to dial automatically when another computer on your home or small office network attempts to access external resources, select the Establish a dial–up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet check box.

If you want other network users to enable or disable the shared Internet connection, select the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection check box.

NTFS Vs FAT32

To NTFS or not to NTFS—that is the question. But unlike the deeper questions of life, this one isn't really all that hard to answer. For most users running Windows XP, NTFS is the obvious choice. It's more powerful and offers security advantages not found in the other file systems. But let's go over the differences among the files systems so we're all clear about the choice. There are essentially three different file systems available in Windows XP: FAT16, short for File Allocation Table, FAT32, and NTFS, short for NT File System.

FAT16
The FAT16 file system was introduced way back with MS–DOS in 1981, and it's showing its age. It was designed originally to handle files on a floppy drive, and has had minor modifications over the years so it can handle hard disks, and even file names longer than the original limitation of 8.3 characters, but it's still the lowest common denominator. The biggest advantage of FAT16 is that it is compatible across a wide variety of operating systems, including Windows 95/98/Me, OS/2, Linux, and some versions of UNIX. The biggest problem of FAT16 is that it has a fixed maximum number of clusters per partition, so as hard disks get bigger and bigger, the size of each cluster has to get larger. In a 2–GB partition, each cluster is 32 kilobytes, meaning that even the smallest file on the partition will take up 32 KB of space. FAT16 also doesn't support compression, encryption, or advanced security using access control lists.

FAT32
The FAT32 file system, originally introduced in Windows 95 Service Pack 2, is really just an extension of the original FAT16 file system that provides for a much larger number of clusters per partition. As such, it greatly improves the overall disk utilization when compared to a FAT16 file system. However, FAT32 shares all of the other limitations of FAT16, and adds an important additional limitation—many operating systems that can recognize FAT16 will not work with FAT32—most notably Windows NT, but also Linux and UNIX as well. Now this isn't a problem if you're running FAT32 on a Windows XP computer and sharing your drive out to other computers on your network—they don't need to know (and generally don't really care) what your underlying file system is.

The Advantages of NTFS
The NTFS file system, introduced with first version of Windows NT, is a completely different file system from FAT. It provides for greatly increased security, file–by–file compression, quotas, and even encryption. It is the default file system for new installations of Windows XP, and if you're doing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows, you'll be asked if you want to convert your existing file systems to NTFS. Don't worry. If you've already upgraded to Windows XP and didn't do the conversion then, it's not a problem. You can convert FAT16 or FAT32 volumes to NTFS at any point. Just remember that you can't easily go back to FAT or FAT32 (without reformatting the drive or partition), not that I think you'll want to.

The NTFS file system is generally not compatible with other operating systems installed on the same computer, nor is it available when you've booted a computer from a floppy disk. For this reason, many system administrators, myself included, used to recommend that users format at least a small partition at the beginning of their main hard disk as FAT. This partition provided a place to store emergency recovery tools or special drivers needed for reinstallation, and was a mechanism for digging yourself out of the hole you'd just dug into. But with the enhanced recovery abilities built into Windows XP (more on that in a future column), I don't think it's necessary or desirable to create that initial FAT partition.

When to Use FAT or FAT32
If you're running more than one operating system on a single computer (see Dual booting in Guides), you will definitely need to format some of your volumes as FAT. Any programs or data that need to be accessed by more than one operating system on that computer should be stored on a FAT16 or possibly FAT32 volume. But keep in mind that you have no security for data on a FAT16 or FAT32 volume—any one with access to the computer can read, change, or even delete any file that is stored on a FAT16 or FAT32 partition. In many cases, this is even possible over a network. So do not store sensitive files on drives or partitions formatted with FAT file systems.

These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry key:

Reset the password

If you have any other administrator account besides your own, you can ask the other user on the system to reset your Windows XP password from the control panel. Or you can yourself use the following dos command to reset the password:

Replace the ‘username’ above with your username on the pc and 123456 becomes your new password. Now you can access your account using your new password (123456).

Recover the password (if you have access to internet enabled computer)

If you want to recover the password, you can use Login recovery for this purpose. Download the image file from there. Put it up in a floppy or burn it into a CD.

Start your computer using the newly created floppy disk or CD, your encrypted password will be automatically saved to the floppy disk.

Then upload the encrypted password file (A:\UPLOAD.TXT) to Login recovery and enter your email address. Your password will be emailed to you. Now how simple is that.

Rapidshare is still the biggest file upload site on the internet. It is also one of the messiest and hard to work out sites that I came upon. sad

There is no way to search for files hosted on Rapidshare.com itself. The only way that was known to me was to use a Google search exclusively for Rapidshare. (site:Rapidshare.com keywords)

This is not an ideal situation, many links found by Google are already dead at Rapidshare and the overall process takes too much time.

However, you can use other websites which provide the facility to search Rapidshare for files and you can be sure that the links are not dead. smile

Searching Rapidshare using Rapidfox

You should be very cautious downloading anything that has an executable from Rapidshare, make sure your virus scanner is up to date before you start unpacking and installing files.

I personally think that Rapidfox offers a good alternative to Google searching Rapidshare. One should also consider that files uploaded to Rapidshare are supposed to be private.

It could very well be that a user uploads a full version of a software that he purchased because he wants to install it on a different computer as well.

The following tricks will let you disable right click for Windows, which means completely disable right click for files, folders, explorer, desktop etc. Since, the first trick doesn't stops right click access for Taskbar and Start Menu, but the second trick will let us disable right click access for Taskbar, Start menu and the clock. However, both the tricks will not disable the system menu (i.e. restore, move, size, close etc when you right click on title of any application).

Disable right click for Taskbar and Start Menu

* Start Group Policy Editor. (Start->Run->"gpedit.msc")
* On the left, go to User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Start Menu and Taskbar.
* On the right, enable this option "Remove access to the context menus for the taskbar".

The above setting hides the menus that appear when you right-click the taskbar and items on the taskbar, such as the Start button, the clock, and the taskbar buttons. This setting does not prevent users from using other methods to issue the commands that appear on these menus.

Annoyance: The pc suddenly shuts down and then i see the led flashing!!

The solution: If the system temperature exceeds a certain limit then the sytem is programmed to automatically shut down so as to avoid damage to heat sensitivi parts like the processor.

first make sure that the outer covers are in place. DOnt ever leave the pc without cause the pc makers design the airflow in such a way that removing the case might actually hamper the airflow. POwer down ur pc then then take out the covers .check the air vents in the covers for dust or other particles that might block the air ventilation. check the fan connections and then replace any broken fan(s).

then after all this is done let the pc cool down for sayy half an hour or so n then turn it back on n check the cpu heat .

The answer: if u are using the ipod on windows make sure that u use the latest ipod software for ur version, otherwise windows may not recognise ur pod.for example a 10 gb ipod can use a version sayyyy 1.3, but it later version with a dock connector can only use a version 2.1.

Improve computer performance by reducing EFS cache validation

Navigate to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTFS\EFS\Parameters and set the parameter of EFSKCACHEPERIOD to a value between 2 and 30. default is 5. Value suggest the time in seconds the kernel will cache the session key for a user for a given file. The Kernel will not validate the user credentials during this cache period. This has the net effect of faster access to encrypted files that may be opened several times during a given time period.This is helpful in kernel and user mode of the EFS (encrypting file system) as it provides quicker access to frequently use components.
Similarly navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EFS and set the value of KeyCacheValidationPeriod to a value in units of second from 1 minute to 1 day (60 to 86400).

Folks, I read about this a long time ago and my preliminary findings are that it works on XP as well even though I can not say how beneficial this trick is (or how damaging !). Also there might be some potential problems with a a few apps. But I would still provide it to You There is a way in registry for You to tell Windows OS to unload DLL,immediately as soon as its use is over. Here is how to do that: . Open Registry by going to START-RUN and entering REGEDIT and Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] and look for AlwaysUnloadDLL parameter. It may not be present by default. If not, add a key by the name AlwaysUnloadDLL and set it to value of 1.

This would inform OS to unload the DLL files from memory immediately. This has its advantages and disadvantages. It may also crash some Microsoft applications (like Access).

Reduce IO and increase turnaround which means faster computer !

And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore. Here's how :

Open up the Registry and go to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under that branch, select the key :

What are XP powerToys?

PowerToys are additional programs that developers work on after the product has been released to manufacturing, but before the next project has begun. These toys add fun and functionality to the Windows experience.

We've taken great care to ensure that PowerToys operate as they should. But please note that these programs are not part of Windows and are not supported by Microsoft. For this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about PowerToys

The PowerToys are installed into the directory you specify during setup. Typically this is the system32 directory.

To uninstall the PowerToys, Open the control Panel. Launch the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet. Find the PowerToys for Windows XP entry, and choose Modify/Remove. From here you can remove specific toys or all of them.

Faster User Switcher
Note: You cannot use this toy if fast user switching is not enabled.

What it is: With Fast User Switching enabled on Windows XP, this PowerToy allows you to switch users without having to use the logon screen.
Special requirements: This PowerToy requires a Windows key on your keyboard.
How to use: Press the Windows key then the Q key to activate; release and press Q to switch to a different user tile, then release both Q and Windows key to switch to that user.

Shell Player

1. Power Button Default Action

The default action for the Power button on the start menu in Windows Vista is Sleep, which isn’t necessarily useful for everybody. You can configure this setting easily by using the advanced power settings panel, which is a little tricky to get to normally, but we’ll take the shortcut. Open a command prompt (type cmd into the start menu search bar), and then type in the following: powercfg.cpl,1. You could also take the long route (Control Panel Power Options Change Plan Settings Change Advanced Power Settings) Once you get to this dialog, browse down as shown to “Power buttons and lid”

From here, you can change the options:

Power button action - Changes the hardware power button action
Start menu power button - Changes the power button on the Start Menu

You can change the power button to either Sleep, Hibernate or Shut Down, or even nothing for the hardware power button.

2. Hide Desktop Icon Text on Windows Vista

Some icons are just obvious enough that nobody should need text below them to tell them what the icon is for. A good example of this is the icon for Internet Explorer. We’re all really used to it by now, and the text just makes it ugly. Just right-click on the shortcut, and choose Rename. Now hold down the Alt key and type in 255 on the keypad to the right of the keyboard. You can’t use the number keys right above the keyboard, they won’t work. If you have a laptop, you can turn on numlock and then use the little number keys next to the regular letters. (You know you always wondered what they were for)

For the first shortcut on the desktop, a simple Alt+255 will do. For the next shortcut, you’ll have to enter the combination twice (Alt+255, Alt+255). For the third, 3 times… you get the idea. The way this works is that the Alt+255 character is blank, so the shortcut filename is actually just named with a character that is completely blank. Since you can’t have two shortcuts or files named the exact same thing, the second shortcut will have to be named with two blank characters.

Now we have a sweet looking icon on the desktop, with no bothersome text beneath it. If you use this tip to rename a folder, you will not be able to rename the folder back using the right-click rename. I’m not sure why this is. What you’ll have to do is open a command prompt and change directory into the containing folder (For instance, the desktop folder), and run this command: ren “Alt+255” “NewFolderName” You will need to actually type the Alt+255 characters where illustrated in the command. It will appear as a space. Note that the Recycle Bin icon won’t work this way.

3. Enable Hidden BootScreen in Windows Vista

The Windows Vista BootScreen is pointless, but Microsoft decided to hide a more visually appealing boot screen that can easily be enabled with very little trouble. I’m not sure why they didn’t make the boot screen better.

Press Win+R, type msconfig and press Enter.
If User Account Control prompts you to allow the action, click on Continue.
In the "System Configuration" window, click on the Boot tab.
Select your Windows Vista installation and under "Boot options", check "No GUI boot". Press OK.
In the dialog that appears, check "Don’t show this message again", and then click on Restart.
Your computer will now reboot, and you will see the Aurora boot screen with text that says "Starting Windows Vista".

Note: You may get a Windows Defender error on the next startup. You can enable the system config utility using the tray icon and this error will go away.

4. Fix for COM Surrogate Has Stopped Working Error in Vista

If you’ve been getting the error COM Surrogate has stopped working whenever you browse folders containing Divx avi files, it looks like the latest Divx update to codec version 6.5 fixes the issue, but it also seems to remove the thumbnails. If you want to upgrade, just use the divx update checker to grab the new version. Looks like it’s finally fixed, at least the error message is now gone, although I really wish they would have just gotten the thumbnails working instead.

If you are using Nero, you will need to update to version 7.7.5.1 to fix the problem. I think this is the source of the error for most people.
If you’ve upgraded Nero and Divx and still have the problem, you can try renaming the file C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadDSFilterNeVideo.ax to NeVideo.ax.bak This will break Nero Showtime, however.

5. Stop an Application from Running at Startup in Windows Vista

Back in the old days, there were a lot of places an application could hook itself to run at startup. You had to check the registry in more than one place, as well as your start menu. With Windows Vista, there’s a built-in panel that handles all that for you. To quickly get to this panel, you can open Control Panel, and then type “startup” into the search box. The link for “Stop a program from running at startup” shows up immediately. You could have also opened Windows Defender and fooled around with the menus until you find the right spot, but this seems quicker to me. Now you can see the Windows Defender screen that lets you manage the startup programs. You can choose to Remove or just Disable any startup item using this panel, as well as lots of other useful information so that you can see what each item is.

6. Emptying Windows Vista Temp Files Directory

Windows Vista Disk Cleanup wizard is really not all that bad, but I did find a small problem with it… It doesn’t fully empty your temp folder. It only allows you to delete temporary files that haven’t been modified in a week. If you’ve recently done a lot of editing or something that generates large temporary files, you may want to manually clean up. Just type in %TEMP% into the start menu search box, and hit enter. You’ll immediate be taken to the temporary files folder, where you can delete whatever you feel like.

7. Disable User Account Control (UAC) For Administrators Only

If you can’t stand the User Account Control prompts, but you’d still like to retain a little bit of security, you can disable it for Administrator accounts only. What we’ll be doing is actually changing Windows Vista to automatically elevate the privilege level for administrators without prompting. The nice thing about doing it this way is that regular users as well as Internet Explorer still run as regular users, and would still use the normal security mechanisms. To configure this setting on Windows Vista Business and Ultimate, you can use the Local Security Policy configuration.

Just type in secpol.msc into the Start menu search box and hit enter.
Now browse down to Local Policies Security Options
Find the following in the list: “User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode” and double-click on it.
Change the setting to “Elevate without prompting”. You should be all done.

This is an easier method that you can use to do the same thing from the GUI interface.

Open up Control Panel, and type in user account into the search box.
You’ll see the link for “Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off”. Click it.
Uncheck the box, and reboot your computer. You should be done with obnoxious prompts!

8. Using Windows Vista System Restore

Windows Vista has a feature called System Restore that automatically backs up registry and system files whenever you install new software or drivers. This feature is useful when you install evil software that makes your computer run really slow. But don’t worry, System Restore won’t remove Windows Vista.

Using System Restore in Windows Vista:

There are two places that you can use the system restore feature from. From within Windows, you can just type restore into the Start menu search box, and you’ll immediately see System Restore at the top of the start menu, or you can type rstrui into the search box and hit enter. Your choice. You will immediate see a screen where you can choose to roll back the system to the last restore point. You can select “Recommended restore”, and just click next, or you can choose a different restore point. If you do choose a different restore point, you will see a list of restore points that you can choose from. Click one of them, and you will have to confirm and then restart your computer to roll the system back. If your system won’t boot If you can’t even get into windows, you can boot off the installation dvd, and choose the “Repair your computer” option on the lower left hand side. Click next on the next screen. Now choose System Restore from the System Recovery dialog. It will take a few seconds to come up, and you will see the same screen that you would see in Windows. Click next, and on the next screen select the drive that your copy of Windows Vista is installed on. Click Finish, and Vista will roll back to the previous restore point. Really pretty simple stuff. I absolutely recommend keeping the system restore feature on in Vista !

9. Verify the Integrity of Windows Vista System Files

Windows Vista includes a utility that will scan your system for corrupt, changed or missing system files. Running this from the command prompt is much easier than booting off the dvd into repair mode. To run this utility, you will need to open a command prompt in administrator mode. You can do that by right clicking the Command Prompt in the list and choose "Run as Administrator" Once you have an administrator command prompt open, you can run the utility by using the following syntax: SFC [/SCANNOW] [/VERIFYONLY] [/SCANFILE=] [/VERIFYFILE=] [/OFFWINDIR= /OFFBOOTDIR=] The most useful command is just to scan immediately, which will scan and attempt to repair any files that are changed or corrupted. You can run that command with this command: sfc /scannow

10. Disable Hibernation & Delete the Hibernation File

Windows places a file on your hard drive that it uses when your computer goes into hibernation mode. If you do not use hibernation mode, or your computer does not properly support it, you may want to disable hibernation and clear the file off your hard drive to free up some space (the file will use as much space as you have in physical memory, so if you have 1GB of RAM, it’s going to use 1GB of your hard drive space).

Disable Hibernation:
1. Click Start, All Programs, and then right click on "Command Prompt".
2. From the context menu click on "Run as administrator".
3. If User Account Control prompts you to allow the action, click on Continue.
4. In the command prompt window, type "powercfg –h off" (without the quotes).
5. Close the Command Prompt window.

Delete the Hibernation File:
1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click "Disk Cleanup".
2. If prompted to choose a drive, select the drive in which Windows Vista is installed on to and press OK.
3. Disk Cleanup will scan the hard drive and present you with a list of options.
4. Check "Hibernation File Cleaner", and then click OK.
5. When asked "Are you sure you want to permanently delete these files?" click on the Delete Files button .

I do this fairly frequently. Once a month or so. There are a few things I do first to make sure I don't waste time defragging unnecessary files.

1.

First is to delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Files and History.
2.

Second is to delete TMP and BAK files.
3.

Third is delete any files and directories in the \TEMP and \WINDOWS\TEMP directories
4.

Defragment without the swapfile. The instructions for this can be found at Defragmenting the Swap File

Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\SecondLevelDataCache. Based on the kind of CPU you have, this value should change. Here are some of the defaults. Intel Celeron - 128 , AMD Duron - 64. PII and Athalon: 512. Cyrix and AMD K6-3 256. Pentium IV-1024. Figure out what your CPU type is and what L2 cache it supports and set it accordingly. It is important to know what critics have to say about this tweak. Opinions vary and I have put following three articles that have been brought to my attention which may help you understand why it may not be effective in some situations:

Do not change the SecondLevelDataCache entry (from Microsoft technet article)
Some third-party sources have erroneously reported that modifying the SecondLevelDataCache registry entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \System \CurrentControlSet \Control \Session Manager\Memory Management can enhance system performance. The second level (L2) cache is recognized by the operating system and is fully utilized regardless of the setting of this parameter.

(from Microsoft knowledge base item Q183063)This is not related to the hardware; it is only useful for computers with direct-mapped L2 caches. Pentium II and later processors do not have direct- mapped L2 caches. SecondLevelDataCache can increase performance by approximately 2 percent in certain cases for older computers with ample memory (more than 64 MB) by scattering physical pages better in the address space so there are not so many L2 cache collisions. Setting SecondLevelDataCache to 256 KB rather than 2 MB (when the computer has a 2 MB L2 cache) would probably have about a 0.4 percent performance penalty.

(From an arstechnica article) One of the most infamous NT tweaks since the introduction of NT4 has got to be the "L2 cache" tweak, a lone registry entry which stipulates the amount of L2 cache (or secondary cache) that the OS will make use of. Well, as with many things in life, the effects of this tweak are not so black and white. If you're using a processor that implements a direct-mapped L2 cache design (like Pentium I's), then this registry adjustment is indeed for you. However, if you own any Intel processor post-PI, or any modern AMD processor (K6-2 and newer), then your processor is using a set-associative L2 cache design, and thus you need not specify your L2 cache size. Let me explain.
If you choose not to futz with the registry key in question, the OS will call on the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) for retrieval of the L2 cache size when you boot your computer. If this happens to fail, a default value of 256KB is used for all logon sessions on that boot session. This is where the myth that NT can only use 256KB of L2 cache comes from. But it's false. See, the HAL is able to retrieve the processor (L2) cache from any processor using the set-associative cache design, it's only the relatively few processors out there with direct-mapped L2 caches that the HAL won't chat it up with. Thus, this tweak only applies to a select number of people anymore (like people with Pentium I procs between 166-233MHz, as lower rated procs had only 256KB cache).

If you see an entry by the name IRQ8Priority set it to a value "IRQ8Priority"=dword:00000001 if you don't then click on the right pane and add a new dword entry with given name.. IRQ8 is typically reserved for real time clock in most of the computers. Make sure thats the case (by going to device manager -> system devices -> system COMS/realtime clock -> properties -> resources tab , if it is set to another number try adding an entry with that number N as IRQNPriority) . Generally realtime clock priority boosting helps most but you are free to try others as well.

Fine tune internet browsing speed : DNS resolution

Internet browsing is such an exciting and easy experience now a days that we have almost forgotten the amount of work that goes behind the scene to make this all happen. We only feel bad if we can't find something easily or have to wait for a long time (I have heard many people saying WWW stands for world wide wait not too long ago!!!) Well with changes in technology and falling prices we have far better hardware and software to do this job but fruits of fine tuning have always been great and would continue to remain so. One of the things that should happen before Internet connection would go through is DNS resolution.DNS stands for Domain Name Service. Even though XP does a fine job of handling DNS resolution, you may still gain by increase the DNS Cache size. To do this you would have to add following entries in registry. Save what is written below in say "dnstuning.reg" file and import it in REGISTRY but opening registry editor and going to IMPORT option from top menu.

You would be surprised to know what you can do from command line of Windows XP Pro. Windows XP Pro comes equipped with a powerful set of command line utilities. If you want to know what they are and how to run them and a good decription of each of them...go no futher.. Its available right in your computer. This is again not a tip or trick or tweak of any kind but information that is as powerful as any of the tips/tricks.

Open START-RUN window and type C:\WINDOWS\Help\ntcmds.chm
Also you may not know that .chm is the windows help file extension. I find the Windows Help to be a very good starting point to learn all the power and resources of Windows environment. I like section of NETSH and Windows scripting host among other things. You can read most of it in the reference but here I am doing a cut/paste of the new command line tools.

Fine tune your internet browsing : Explorer browse time

If you do this little trick, application load time may improve significantly. Right Click on shortcut to Internet. Explorer in taskbar ( If you do not see it right click on taskbar,click toolbar and select quicklaunch) , click on properties and under shortcut tab look for Target field. It should say some thing like "C:\Program Files\Internet. Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE". This is typical default. I am suggesting you to put " -nohome" without quotes at the end of this string with one space in between. It should read like this :

"C:\Program Files\Internet. Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome.

Doing this would help load the application quickly as time would not be wasted in connecting to home page again and again. This is good for normal use as well.

Well,to do this:

Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl]. If you see an entry by the name IRQ8Priority set it to a value "IRQ8Priority"=dword:00000001 if you don't then click on the right pane and add a new dword entry with given name.. IRQ8 is typically reserved for real time clock in most of the computers. Make sure thats the case (by going to device manager -> system devices -> system COMS/realtime clock -> properties -> resources tab , if it is set to another number try adding an entry with that number N as IRQNPriority) . Generally realtime clock priority boosting helps most but you are free to try others as well.

Automated System Recovery (ASR)

Complete the steps outlined below to utilize XP's Automated System Recovery (ASR) functionality.

Scope:

Dual Partitions (C and D)
XP installed on C

Backup

1. Go to the Start button/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Backup
2. Select the Advanced Mode link within the Backup wizard.
3. Click the Automated System Restore Wizard button.
4. Point the backup media file name to the D drive rename the backup file asr (d:\asr.bkf). (*Do not point the backup to the C drive where XP is installed because during the Restore mode the C drive will be formatted) Click Next and then click Finish. ASR will start it's System State backup (which copies all system files and registry configuration)
5. After the backup of the system state is completed (approx 5-10 minutes), You will be prompted to insert a floppy disk into the A drive. Click OK. XP will complete the ASR backup.

* ASR will only backup the system state (windows folder) and registry configuration. You must return to Backup and create a separate backup of your valued data to the D drive.

Restore

In the event that your system becomes inaccessible and/or System Restore does not function properly, complete these steps.

1. Make sure the system can boot from a CD-Rom (via the bios setup)
2. Insert the Windows XP CD-Rom into the drive
3. Insert the ASR Floppy disk into the drive
4. Power up the computer
5. Press the enter key when prompted to "press any key to run from the CD-rom"
6. Press F2 on the keyboard when prompted to start the ASR recovery action.
7. XP will format the C drive
8. The computer will restart
9. Let windows XP start automatically (do not press a key to run from the CD rom).
10. XP will go through the basic plug and play discovery and copy setup files to the C drive.
11. The computer will restart and boot into XP
12. The ASR wizard will start and automatically point to the asr.bkf file on the D drive. Click OK to restore the system state and registry configuration.
13. When completed XP will either present the login screen or login to the desktop automatically (depending on the configuration at the time the ASR backup was initiated).
14. Return to the Backup wizard to restore any valued data that was saved beforehand to the D drive.

Benefits of using ASR

Timesaver = Entire restore process takes less than 30 minutes.
Configuration in tact = Desktop and user preference settings will be maintained.
Redundancy = Provides an additional restore option besides System Restore.
Registry = Backs up and restores the entire current registry configuration settings.

Drawbacks of using ASR

Does not restore any installed programs from the program Files folder.
Does not work on a single partition.

Completing an ASR backup on a regular basis will provide additional control over the outcome of a system failure.

To speed up your hard disk speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the disk.
This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.
Follow these steps:

Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.

Expand the system.ini file window.

Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].

Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type

Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!

Click on the File menu, then choose Save.

Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.

Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

Switching off the browser download block .

....... When a website initiates an automatic dowanlod , the browser immediately shows an info bar on the top border under the symbol bar . Only after clicking this bar & reselecting the download option in it , you reach the usual dialog . This is often a pain in da ass ( Pardon Me ! ) ( hehe .. )

With this option , you can completely switch off the info bar . Activate the ' Security ' tab in 'Internet Options' , & then click on ' Custom level ' . In the ensuing dialog , search for the option
' Automatic prompting for file downloads ' in the ' Downloads ' section & change it to ' Enable ' .
Now confirm with 'OK' , & click 'Yes' for the following warning message.

If your using Internet Explorer 7 , then even in case of the first method , you will have to make this setting seperately for the ' Trusted Sites ' zone . Now , you can carry out the above , to execute downloads without any interruptive questions .

Convert Fat32 to NTFS .

Windows has a built in command line tool called 'convert.exe' . To convert a partition from Fat32 to NTFS make sure you first have proper back-up of your system before you start. Now , click

' Start Programs Accessories Command Prompt ' .

At the prompt type ' convert ' followed by your drive letter & then the file system type has to be changed to , for instance , I have a drive 'E' (FAT32) which needs to be changed to NTFS . The command used here will be ,

' convert e:\fs:ntfs '

The duration for this process depends on the size of your hard drive or partition . It usually takes a few minutes.
But please note , drives once converted to NTFS cannot be converted back to FAT32 . So make a prudent decision .

Okie .. Now the method ..

If your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive tray mechanism malfunctions & your CD or DVD refuses to eject from the drive , here's a simple way of rescuing it manually .

In such a case , your tool is a simple pin ! You can even use a straightened paper clip or nething else that's thin & pointed . Locate the little hole right below the CD tray of your Drive. Insert the pin in the hole & push it straight & slowly until the drive ejects the media inside.

Its preferable to try this only in case of emergencies ..

Disable the starting Windows boot logo (splash screen)

It is possible to disable the XP splash screen which will speed up the overall boot process slightly . But remember removing the splash screen will also bar you from seeing any boot-up message that might come up (for instance, if there is a system crash, the chkdsk screen will not show up, nor will tools like convert, etc). But if your system is problem free, it should not matter.

To disable the boot logo, right-click on 'My Computer', choose 'Properties' and then select the 'Advance" tab. Under the 'Startup and Recovery' section, click 'Settings'. Then again in the 'system startup' sectiion, clock the 'Edit' button of the 'Default operating system' section . Now the boot.ini file will open in a Notepad. Edit the boot.ini . Add '/noguiboot' , right after '/fastdetect' . Make the necessary changes and save the Boot.ini file. Make sure you create a backup of the file in case you mess it up. Now when you restart, the splash screen won't appear. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch.

There is One Simple li'l solution .

With Internet Explorer 6 in the Windows XP , typing web addresses is realy convinient . All u hav to do is type the domain of an address , such as Microsoft & then press [Ctrl]+Enter .

Internet Explorer automatically wraps 'http://www.....com' around what u typed.

This works even with Internet Explorer 7 ..

If you need to edit an address, u can use [Ctrl]+Left Arrow & [Ctrl]+Right Arrow to ezily move between different parts of the address seperated by periods ..

Spotting a 16-bit application ..

Because most windows 3.x - based programs run properly under WindowsXP , it's sometimes difficult to distinguish between 16 -bit & 32-bit applications . You can right click on da programs' executable file ( .exe file ) & then choose 'Properties' . If u see a 'Version Tab' , its a 32-bit program .

If the program is running , press 'Ctrl+Shift+Esc' to open the Windows Task Manager . In da 'Processes ' tab , look in the 'Image Name' column for the name of the program's executable file . If any 16-bit programs are running , you'll find an entry for Ntvdm.exe , this virtual DOS machine. Just above this in the list, you'll see indented entries for Wowexec.exe ( the Windows on Windiws subsystem ) & the executable name of each 16-bit program running in that virtual machine .

BandWidth Explained

Most hosting companies offer a variety of bandwidth options in their plans. So exactly what is bandwidth as it relates to web hosting? Put simply, bandwidth is the amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and the rest of the internet. The amount of bandwidth a hosting company can provide is determined by their network connections, both internal to their data center and external to the public internet.

Network Connectivity

The internet, in the most simplest of terms, is a group of millions of computers connected by networks. These connections within the internet can be large or small depending upon the cabling and equipment that is used at a particular internet location. It is the size of each network connection that determines how much bandwidth is available. For example, if you use a DSL connection to connect to the internet, you have 1.54 Mega bits (Mb) of bandwidth. Bandwidth therefore is measured in bits (a single 0 or 1). Bits are grouped in bytes which form words, text, and other information that is transferred between your computer and the internet.

If you have a DSL connection to the internet, you have dedicated bandwidth between your computer and your internet provider. But your internet provider may have thousands of DSL connections to their location. All of these connection aggregate at your internet provider who then has their own dedicated connection to the internet (or multiple connections) which is much larger than your single connection. They must have enough bandwidth to serve your computing needs as well as all of their other customers. So while you have a 1.54Mb connection to your internet provider, your internet provider may have a 255Mb connection to the internet so it can accommodate your needs and up to 166 other users (255/1.54).

Traffic

A very simple analogy to use to understand bandwidth and traffic is to think of highways and cars. Bandwidth is the number of lanes on the highway and traffic is the number of cars on the highway. If you are the only car on a highway, you can travel very quickly. If you are stuck in the middle of rush hour, you may travel very slowly since all of the lanes are being used up.

Traffic is simply the number of bits that are transferred on network connections. It is easiest to understand traffic using examples. One Gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. To put this in perspective, it takes one byte to store one character. Imagine 100 file cabinets in a building, each of these cabinets holds 1000 folders. Each folder has 100 papers. Each paper contains 100 characters - A GB is all the characters in the building. An MP3 song is about 4MB, the same song in wav format is about 40MB, a full length movie can be 800MB to 1000MB (1000MB = 1GB).

If you were to transfer this MP3 song from a web site to your computer, you would create 4MB of traffic between the web site you are downloading from and your computer. Depending upon the network connection between the web site and the internet, the transfer may occur very quickly, or it could take time if other people are also downloading files at the same time. If, for example, the web site you download from has a 10MB connection to the internet, and you are the only person accessing that web site to download your MP3, your 4MB file will be the only traffic on that web site. However, if three people are all downloading that same MP at the same time, 12MB (3 x 4MB) of traffic has been created. Because in this example, the host only has 10MB of bandwidth, someone will have to wait. The network equipment at the hosting company will cycle through each person downloading the file and transfer a small portion at a time so each person's file transfer can take place, but the transfer for everyone downloading the file will be slower. If 100 people all came to the site and downloaded the MP3 at the same time, the transfers would be extremely slow. If the host wanted to decrease the time it took to download files simultaneously, it could increase the bandwidth of their internet connection (at a cost due to upgrading equipment).

Hosting Bandwidth

In the example above, we discussed traffic in terms of downloading an MP3 file. However, each time you visit a web site, you are creating traffic, because in order to view that web page on your computer, the web page is first downloaded to your computer (between the web site and you) which is then displayed using your browser software (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) . The page itself is simply a file that creates traffic just like the MP3 file in the example above (however, a web page is usually much smaller than a music file).

A web page may be very small or large depending upon the amount of text and the number and quality of images integrated within the web page. For example, the home page for CNN.com is about 200KB (200 Kilobytes = 200,000 bytes = 1,600,000 bits). This is typically large for a web page. In comparison, Yahoo's home page is about 70KB.

How Much Bandwidth Is Enough?

It depends (don't you hate that answer). But in truth, it does. Since bandwidth is a significant determinant of hosting plan prices, you should take time to determine just how much is right for you. Almost all hosting plans have bandwidth requirements measured in months, so you need to estimate the amount of bandwidth that will be required by your site on a monthly basis.

If you do not intend to provide file download capability from your site, the formula for calculating bandwidth is fairly straightforward:
Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Views x Average Page Size x 31 x Fudge Factor

If you intend to allow people to download files from your site, your bandwidth calculation should be:

[(Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Views x Average Page Size) +(Average Daily File Downloads x Average File Size)] x 31 x Fudge Factor

Let us examine each item in the formula:

Average Daily Visitors - The number of people you expect to visit your site, on average, each day. Depending upon how you market your site, this number could be from 1 to 1,000,000.

Average Page Views - On average, the number of web pages you expect a person to view. If you have 50 web pages in your web site, an average person may only view 5 of those pages each time they visit.

Average Page Size - The average size of your web pages, in Kilobytes (KB). If you have already designed your site, you can calculate this directly.

Average Daily File Downloads - The number of downloads you expect to occur on your site. This is a function of the numbers of visitors and how many times a visitor downloads a file, on average, each day.

Average File Size - Average file size of files that are downloadable from your site. Similar to your web pages, if you already know which files can be downloaded, you can calculate this directly.
Fudge Factor - A number greater than 1. Using 1.5 would be safe, which assumes that your estimate is off by 50%. However, if you were very unsure, you could use 2 or 3 to ensure that your bandwidth requirements are more than met.

Usually, hosting plans offer bandwidth in terms of Gigabytes (GB) per month. This is why our formula takes daily averages and multiplies them by 31.

Summary

Most personal or small business sites will not need more than 1GB of bandwidth per month. If you have a web site that is composed of static web pages and you expect little traffic to your site on a daily basis, go with a low bandwidth plan. If you go over the amount of bandwidth allocated in your plan, your hosting company could charge you over usage fees, so if you think the traffic to your site will be significant, you may want to go through the calculations above to estimate the amount of bandwidth required in a hosting plan.

5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.
These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display.

Go to -

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.
If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict.

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

6 Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk.

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.

An excellent antivirus programme is McAfee VirusScan by Network Associates ( www.nai.com). Another is Norton AntiVirus 2000, made by Symantec ( www.symantec.com).

7 Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.
Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer's performance.

If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer's default settings and you may be able to carry on.

8 Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.
The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don't do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from www.jv16.org

Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message "Starting Windows" press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.
Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn't work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.

9 Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.

Furthur you will know how things work and how the IP is traced down and the different networks associated in this tracing process.

Let us take a look at tracert tool provided for DOS by Microsoft.
It is a very handy tool for peoples need to trace down an IP.
Just open any DOS windows and type tracert.

Options:
-d Do not resolve addresses to hostnames.

You will now see a description of the tracert command and the switches associated with it.
Well these switches doesn’t makes much difference. All you can do is to increase the timeout in milliseconds by using –w switch if you are using a slow connection and the –d switch if you wish not resolve address to hostnames by default.
By default tracert performs a maximum of 30 hops trace. Using the –h switch you can specify the number of hops to perform.

First packets of data leave my ISP which is at 203.94.246.35 .Similarly you can find out the different routers through which the packets of data are send and received to and from the target system. Now take a look at the 13th line you’ll see that the router is in PaloAlto.Teleglobe.net from this you can easily figure out that the router is in Palo Alto. Now finally look at the target system ie. Yahoo’s server vl20.bas1.snv.yahoo.com . Now you got the address of yahoo’s server. Now put this address in any IP lookup programe and perform and reverse DNS lookup and you will get most of the info about this address,like the place where it is in.
Well another thing you can find out using the tracert tool is that the number of hops (routers) the target system is away from you. In case of tracerouting yahoo.com we find that the target system ie yahoo’s server is 16 hops away from my system. This indicates that there are 16 routers between my system and yahoo’s server.

Apart from tracing an IP you can find out many usefull details about the target system using the tracert tool.

This is a tutorial on how to get IP address from MSN messenger. This is actually
a really easy thing to do. It is not like going through the hard time and reversing
MSN messenger like many people think.
The IP address is only given when you accept or are sending a file through MSN
messenger. When you send IM's, the message is sent through the server thus hiding
your victims IP and your. But when you send a file or recieve a file, it is direct
connection between the two computers.
To obtain the IP accept a file transfer or send a file to the victim, when the file
sending is under way from the dos prompt type "netstat" without the quotation marks.
You should get a table like this:

All you need to do now is to put this address in you IP lookup programe and get the IP of the remote system.

How to find security holes

1) Physical Security Holes.

- Where the potential problem is caused by giving unauthorised persons
physical access to the machine, where this might allow them to perform
things that they shouldn't be able to do.

A good example of this would be a public workstation room where it would
be trivial for a user to reboot a machine into single-user mode and muck
around with the workstation filestore, if precautions are not taken.

Another example of this is the need to restrict access to confidential
backup tapes, which may (otherwise) be read by any user with access to
the tapes and a tape drive, whether they are meant to have permission or
not.

2) Software Security Holes

- Where the problem is caused by badly written items of "privledged"
software (daemons, cronjobs) which can be compromised into doing things
which they shouldn't oughta.

The most famous example of this is the "sendmail debug" hole (see
bibliography) which would enable a cracker to bootstrap a "root" shell.
This could be used to delete your filestore, create a new account, copy
your password file, anything.

(Contrary to popular opinion, crack attacks via sendmail were not just
restricted to the infamous "Internet Worm" - any cracker could do this
by using "telnet" to port 25 on the target machine. The story behind a
similar hole (this time in the EMACS "move-mail" software) is described
in [Stoll].)

New holes like this appear all the time, and your best hopes are to:

a: try to structure your system so that as little software as possible
runs with root/daemon/bin privileges, and that which does is known to
be robust.

b: subscribe to a mailing list which can get details of problems
and/or fixes out to you as quickly as possible, and then ACT when you
receive information.

3) Incompatible Usage Security Holes

System Manager assembles a combination of hardware and software which
when used as a system is seriously flawed from a security point of view.
It is the incompatibility of trying to do two unconnected but useful
things which creates the security hole.

Problems like this are a pain to find once a system is set up and
running, so it is better to build your system with them in mind. It's
never too late to have a rethink, though.

Some examples are detailed below; let's not go into them here, it would
only spoil the surprise.

The following four step method was created by System Development
Corporation, who report a 65% success rate on the flaw hypotheses
generated. Doing a comprehensive search for operating system flaws
requires four steps:

Step 1) Knowledge of system control structure.
===============================================
To find security holes, and identifying design weaknesses it is
necessary to understand the system control structure, and layers.
One should be able to list the:
A) security objects: items to be protected. ie: a users file.
B) control objects: items that protect security objects. ie: a i-node
C) mutual objects : objects in both classes. ie: the password file
With such a list, it is possible to graphically represent a control
hierarchy and identify potential points of attack. Making flow charts
to give a visual breakdown of relationships definitely helps.
Reading the various users, operators, and administrators manuals should
provide this information.
(following para's should probably be moved to a "legal" section)
Reading and greping source code should also prove valuable. For those
without a source licence, I would suggest we use LINUX, NET2, and BSD386
distributions in order to stay legal. At some future time we may be able
to form a working contract between someone or a company with legal access
to other distributions and members actively participating in this project.
It appears that extracts of proprietary code may be used for academic
study, so long as they are not reused in a commercial product - more
checking is necessary though.

Step 2) Generate an inventory of suspected flaws. (i.e. flaw hypotheses)

What UNIX src does a particular flavor derive from? This is important
for cross references (very often only one vendor patches certain code,
which may get reused, in it's unpatched reincarnation by others)
A solid cross reference:
Who checked which bug in what OS and what version prevents us from
duplicating work.

A good start would be listing all the suid binaries on the various OS
flavors/versions. Then try to work out why each program is suid. i.e.:
rcp is suid root because it must use a privilaged port to do user
name authentication.
Often code that was never designed to be suid, is made suid, durring
porting to solve file access problems.
We need to develope a data base that will be able to look at pairs and
triplets of data, specificly: program name, suid, sgid, object accessed
(why prog is suid/sgid), OS flavor/version, and flav/vers geniology.
Any sugestions on how to implement such a DB?

Step 3) Confirm hypotheses. (test and exploit flaws)

Step 4) Make generalizations of the underlying system weaknesses, for
which the flaw represents a specific instance.

Specific Flaws to Check For:
============================
1) Look for routines that don't do boundary checking, or verify input.
ie: the gets() family of routines, where it is possible to overwrite
buffer boundaries. ( sprintf()?, gets(), etc. )
also: strcpy() which is why most src has:
#define SCYPYN((a)(b)) strcpy(a, b, sizeof(a))

2) SUID/SGID routines written in one of the shells, instead of C or
PERL.

3) SUID/SGID routines written in PERL that don't use the "taintperl"
program.)

4) SUID/SGID routines that use the system(), popen(), execlp(), or
execvp() calls to run something else.

5) Any program that uses relative path names inside the program.

6) The use of relative path names to specify dynamically linked libraries.
(look in Makefile).

7) Routines that don't check error return codes from system calls. (ie:
fork(2), suid(2), etc), setuid() rather, as in the famous rcp bug

8) Holes can often be found in code that:
A) is ported to a new environment.
B) receives unexpected input.
C) interacts with other local software.
D) accesses system files like passwd, L.sys, etc.
E) reads input from a publicly writable file/directory.
F) diagnostic programs which are typically not user-proofed.

9) Test code for unexpected input. Coverage, data flow, and mutation
testing tools are available.

10) Look in man pages, and users guides for warnings against doing X, and
try variations of X. Ditto for "bugs" section.

11) Look for seldom used, or unusual functions or commands - read backwards.
In particular looking for undocumented flags/arguments may prove useful.
Check flags that were in prior releases, or in other OS versions. Check
for options that other programs might use. For instance telnet uses -h
option to login ...

25) Any program running with system privileges. (too many progs are given
uid 0, to facilitate access to certain tables, etc.)

26) Group or world readable temporary files, buffers, etc.

27) Lack of threshold values, and lack of logging/notification once these
have been triggered.

28) Changing parameters of critical system areas prior to their execution
by a concurrent process. (race conditions)

29) Inadequate boundary checking at compile time, for example, a user
may be able to execute machine code disguised as data in a data area.
(if text and data areas are shared)

30) Improperly handling user generated asynchronous interrupts. Users
interrupting a process, performing an operation, and either returning
to continue the process or begin another will frequently leave the
system in an unprotected state. Partially written files are left open,
improper writing of protection infraction messages, improper setting
of protection bits, etc often occur.

31) Code that uses fopen(3) without setting the umask. ( eg: at(1), etc. )
In general, code that does not reset the real and effective uid before
forking.

32) Trace is your friend (or truss in SVR4) for helping figure out what
system calls a program is using.

33) Scan /usr/local fs's closely. Many admins will install software from
the net. Often you'll find tcpdump, top, nfswatch, ... suid'd root for
their ease of use.

34) Check suid programs to see if they are the ones originally put on the
system. Admins will sometimes put in a passwd replacement which is less
secure than the distributed version.

35) Look for programs that were there to install software or loadable
kernel modules.

36) Dynamically linked programs in general. Remember LD_PRELOAD, I think
that was the variable.

37) I/O channel programming is a prime target. Look for logical errors,
inconsistencies, and omissions.

38) See if it's possible for a I/O channel program to modify itself, loop
back, and then execute the newly modified code. (instruction pre-load
may screw this up)

39) If I/O channels act as independent processors they may have unlimited
access to memory, thus system code may be modified in memory prior to
execution.

40) Look for bugs requiring flaws in multiple pieces of software, i.e. say
program a can be used to change config file /etc/a now program b assumes
the information in a to be correct and this leads to unexpected results
(just look at how many programs trust /etc/utmp)

41) Any program, especially those suid/sgid, that allow shell escapes.

10 Reasons ... Why Pc's Crash .. ( Part -1 )

These are 10 reasons why computer's crash .. you must know this ..

Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy," it says. "Enter to return to Windows or press Control-Alt-Delete to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications."

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1 Hardware conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.
Often if a device has a problem a yellow '!' appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.
Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as 'IRQ holder for PCI steering'. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com. If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.
EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer's display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to 'yes' to allow Windows to do this.).

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze.

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter
This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.
The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).
Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by..

Going to :
* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.
Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.
Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors.

Go to :
* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk
Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.
These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display.

Go to :
* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings
Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.
If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict.

Go to :
* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager
Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.
If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.
The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.
Another useful way to resolve video problems is to ..

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).

How to Remote Shutdown Your Compuer !

XP PRO has a lot of fun utilities. One of the most useful ones I have found to date is the ability to remotely reboot a PC. There are 2 ways of doing this. You will need to have admin access to the PC to preform these actions. That being said, here is the first way to do it:

Right click my computer, choose manage.
Highlight the Computer Management (Local) then click on Action, choose connect to another computer.
In the window that opens fill in the machine name of the PC you want to connect to and click ok.
Once connected right click on Computer Management (Remote machine name) and choose properties.
Go to the "Advanced" tab and click the Settings button under Start up and recovery.
Click on the Shutdown button.
Under action choose what you want to do (you can log off current user, shut down, restart, or power down. you can also choose if you want to force all applications to close, close hung apps, or wait for all apps to close by themselves).

The second way... Remember dos... that good old thing. Open up a command prompt and enter in the following :

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -r -m \\Machinename. The command prompt has more switches and options. I highly suggest using shutdown.exe /? to see all the posibilities.

The symptoms when Winsock2 is damaged show when you try to release and renew the IP address using IPCONFIG...

And you get the following error message:

Also Internet Explorer may give the following error message:
The page cannot be displayed Additionally, you may have no IP address or no Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address, and you may be receiving IP packets but not sending them.

There are two easy ways to determine if Winsock2 is damaged:

From the XP source files, go to the Support / Tools directory

1. Browse or search your favorite dynamic flash template in TM website. If you got one... click the "view" link and new window will open with dynamic flash.. loading...

2. If the movie fully loaded, click View -> Source in your browser to bring the source code of the current page and in the source code, search for "IFRAME" and you will see the iframe page. In this example were going to try the 7045 dynamic template. get the URL(ex.http://images.templatemonster.com/screenshots/7000/7045.html) then paste it to your browser... easy eh? wait! dont be to excited... erase the .html and change it to swf then press enter then you'll see the flash movie again icon_smile.gif.

3. Copy the URL and download that SWF file.. use your favorite download manager.. mine I used flashget icon_smile.gif NOTE: dont close the browser we may need that later on.

4. open your Sothink SWF decompiler... click "Quick Open" then browse where you download your SWF/movie file. Click Export FLA to export your SWF to FLA, in short, save it as FLA icon_smile.gif

5. Open your Macromedia FLash and open the saved FLA file. press Control+Enter or publish the file... then wallah! the output window will come up with "Error opening URL blah blah blah..." dont panic, that error will help you where to get the remaining files.

6. Copy the first error, example: "7045_main.html" then go back to your browser and replace the 7045.swf to 7045_main.html press enter and you'll see a lot of text... nonsense text icon_lol.gif that text are your contents...

NOTE: When you save the remaining files dont forget to save with underscore sign (_) in the front on the file without the TM item number (e.g. 7045) if it is html save it as "_main.html" and same with the image save it as "_works1.jpg" save them where you save the FLA and SWF files. Continue browsing the file inside Flash application so you can track the remaining files... do the same until you finish downloading all the remaining the files.
